2023 Save the Species

Support Save the Species THIS GIVING SEASON and help save the endemic palms of the Comoro Islands

THE ASK

This year, the International Palm Society, in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, will be working towards conservation efforts of the endemic palm species of the Comoro Islands, especially the critically endangered Ravenea moorei.

Between #GivingTuesday, November 28, and December 31, 2023, donate to Save the Species and help us in our efforts!

WHY THESE PALMS?

The historic Palm House at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, a World Heritage Site, is regarded as the most significant surviving glasshouse from the 19th Century. It currently houses and displays several imperilled palm species, including Ravenea moorei

This elegant species is dioecious and the male tree at Kew may be the only plant in cultivation. It originates from the Comoro Islands, where the native forests are highly degraded. Ravenea moorei is facing imminent extinction in the wild. Moreover, the palm at Kew faces an uncertain future due to essential structural works on the Palm House.

Our Save the Species effort directly targets habitat protection and conservation efforts for this endangered species.

Where the money goes

Given the urgency of the situation, an international team from Kew and the Comoro Islands, headed by Dr. Bill Baker, are planning emergency scientific fieldwork in the Comoro Islands. They aim to survey all of the Comoro Islands to assess the wild status of all endemic palms (Ravenea moorei, Ravenea hildebrandtii, Chrysalidocarpus lanceolatus), all of which are endangered.

Based on their findings, they will devise a conservation action plan for Comorean palms and provide the necessary horticultural and scientific training so that the plan can be enacted.

By supporting our Save the Species Campaign, you will help the conservation team:

Survey all Comoro Islands to assess the wild status of all endemic palms.

Devise a conservation action plan for Comorean palms.

Provide the necessary horticultural and scientific training so that the plan can be enacted.
