The big island of Madagascar is a center of biodiversity, famous worldwide for its extraordinary landscapes, fauna and amazing flora, ancient culture… it is the place of a great floristic richness especially on palms with 192 species of which the vast majority are endemic. Ambohitantely Special Reserve
You will land in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. The next morning, after a hundred kilometers of road and then a dozen of track, you will arrive at the special Ambohitantely reserve, a little-known forest reserve, located in the northwest of the capital, about 1500 meters altitude, and which has the particularity of sheltering one of the last vestiges of forest of the high central plateau of Madagascar. There, you will have the chance to discover one of the most important populations of the mythical Dypsis decipiens, the famous palm of the highlands. In this incredible landscape alternating savannas as far as the eye can see and forest groves in the bottoms of valleys, you may also observe the very rare Dypsis oropedionis(CR) as well as a rich flora typical of highlands including aloes, orchids. The evening, you will return to Antananarivo to spend the night again, before leaving the next day for Andasibe.
Andasibe
About 3 hours drive from the capital, Andasibe is a huge forest area made up of several parks and reserves more or less connected. This place is famous for easily observing some emblematic species of Malagasy wildlife, including the largest lemur, Indri Indri, but also other species of lemurs including Propithecus diadema. But it is also known by palm lovers to host an incredible diversity of species including some of the most emblematic. For this stay of 4 days in Andasibe, 3 to 4 reserves will be on the program according to your desires. You will stay at Vakona Lodge (subject to availability), known for cultivating in its garden the famous Dypsis sp. Black Stem.
Analamazaotra Special Reserve
This small forest reserve, easy to access, can be scheduled from the afternoon of your arrival. With a little luck, you may observe the Indri Indri, and get a first idea of the flora of the area, with many small species of understory palms, but also some more impressive like Ravenea robustior.
.
Maromizaha Reserve
Composed of steep hills separated by narrow valleys, this reserve has a wide variation in altitude, from 700 m to over 1200 m altitude, conferring a variety of environments and therefore a very important floristic wealth. Managed by the Group of Studies and Research on Primates (GERP), this reserve is quite unknown because it is poorly open to the public. You will find an important diversity of palms between the ridges and valley bottoms and will probably discover some of the last Beccariophoenix madagascariensis and the rare Marojejya insignis. Lemurs should be at the rendezvous again!
Mitsinjo Reserve
The Mitsinjo reserve is a small village community reserve, as interesting in diversity as the previous ones, which has the particularity of hosting the very rare Ravenea louvelii (CR), as well as probably the mysterious Dypsis pilulifera. The Mitsinjo Reserve is known worldwide for hosting one of the last known populations of the golden frog Mantella aurantiaca and for having developed a conservation program for the species and a breeding center.
Back to Antananarivo where you will spend the last night, according to the flight schedule, you may enjoy the capital and why not its botanical garden Tsimbazaza where you will admire the collections of succulents and some beautiful specimens of palm trees (Dypsis decipiens, Dypsis mananjarensis, Bismarckia nobilis …)

Masoala National Park
The Masoala National Park is the largest and most beautiful park in Madagascar. Located on the peninsula of the same name, it is home to a flora and fauna of incredible diversity and many species of palm trees. After having reached Maroansetra by domestic flight from Tamatave, you will cross the bay of Antongil by boat to reach the comfortable Lodge “Chez Arol” located in an idyllic setting, at the edge of a huge deserted beach surrounded by forests. From there, you will be accompanied by guides knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna, and for 2 days, you will explore the surrounding forest in search of some of the rarest palms in the world, including the legendary and very impressive Lemurophoenix halleuxii, but also many others: Dypsis hovomantsina, Dypsis dransfieldii, Dypsis carlsmithii… and even the very rare Satranala decussilvae! You will also discover a multitude of other plants: orchids, begonias, ferns, … Back from ballads, you will have great pleasure to stroll in the small fishing village not far from there or to enjoy breathtaking beaches. When you return to Maroansetra, you will stop at Nosy Mangabe Island. You will discover a botanical trail where you can surely observe the white-fronted lemur, the micro-chameleons, the black and yellow treefrog. You will also visit the Betsimisaraka Tombs.
Makira protected Park
After a break in Maroansetra, where you may do some shopping, visit the very typical local market, and maybe even have the chance to see the famous tomato frogs, you will go on an adventure towards the Makira Park. From Maroansetra, it will take you a day to reach the Makira science camp, after 4 to 5 hours of pirogue and a steep approach walk (3 hours of walking for about 500 m of elevation). Makira Park is an immense forest corridor (300,000 ha) of recent protection status and considered one of the most biodiverse areas of the Big Island. It is home to 20 species of lemurs including the very rare silky Indri and Sifaka, as well as a multitude of endemic plant species, many of which are still unknown to science. Protection of the reserve has recently been provided by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) as part of a community project in partnership with the local population, thus ensuring that the surrounding villages benefit directly from the benefits provided by the Park. This stay which is proposed to you is exceptional because the park is only little open to the public. You will thus benefit from the Makira camp usually reserved for scientists where you will be accommodated in bungalows (2 places) or under tents. From here, always accompanied by guides who know perfectly the fauna and the flora, you will be able to traverse the paths of this little known forest, and to discover about twenty species of palms emblematic: the majestic Ravenea Albicans and Orania ravaka, the immense Dypsis tsaravoasira, the sublime Dypsis thiryana, …. In the evening, you may enjoy night tours in search of the mysterious nocturnal animals of the forest, funny little lemurs and the huge lizards Uroplatus. After returning by pirogue to Maroansetra, then one last night to Maroansetra, you will go back to Tamatave by a domestic flight, then la Reunion. A trip you will never forget …
