PRE-TOUR DAY 2. fri OCT. 7TH. Visit gardens on north shore

  • Snorkel one of Maui’s best snorkel spots, Black Rock – just steps away from the hotel
  • Enjoy one of the many activities Maui has to offer
  • Take a short taxi ride to historic Lahaina
  • All meals are on your own

PRE-TOUR DAY 4. sun OCT. 9TH. depart to honolulu for biennial event

Island: Oahu, Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort

  • Breakfast
  • Enjoy a morning walk or quick dip in the ocean before checkout
  • 11:00 AM Group transfer to the airport
  • 1:50 PM flight from Maui to Oahu
  • Group airport transfer to Waikiki Hotel

BIENNIAL TRIP: WAIKIKI & THE BIG ISLAND

Day 1. Sun Oct. 9th. Arrival Day for all attendees.

Island: Oahu, Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort

  • Breakfast at hotel for Board Members
  • Attendees will provide their own transfer to Waikiki Hotel
  • 6:00 PM Social gathering at hotel
  • 7:00 PM Welcome Banquet
  • 8:00 PM Opening remarks by IPS President, Robert Blenker, followed by a presentation by Dr. Wolf Eiserhardt (introduced by Jeff Marcus). Dr. Eiserhardt will address species diversity in the Dypsis genus of Madagascar.

Day 2. Mon Oct. 10th. Lyon Arboretum and Foster Garden.

Island: Oahu, Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort

  • Breakfast for all attendees
  • Visit Lyon Arboretum followed by Foster Garden
  • Includes box lunch
  • Banquet dinner
  • Speaker:
    • Mike DeMotta, Curator of Living Collections, National Tropical Botancial Garden (introduced by Andrew Street). Mr. DeMotta will review the endemic palms of Hawaii and unveil the next “save the species” campaign in partnership with the NTBG.

Day 3. Tue Oct 11th. Ho’omaluhia visit and Depart to Hilo.

Island: Hilo, Big Island Hilo Hawaiian Hotel

  • Breakfast for all attendees
  • Check out of hotel and load luggage on tour bus
  • Visit Ho’omaluhia and then depart to HNL Airport
  • 50-minute flight from Honolulu to Hilo via Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest Airlines
  • Arrive in Hilo; Motorcoach transfer to Hilo Hawaiian Hotel
  • Banquet dinner
  • Speakers
    • Don Hemmes, UH Hilo Biology professor emeritus and Hawaii Island Palm Society member (introduced by HIPS President, Rick Kelley). Professor Hemmes will reflect upon the Hawaiian Island Palm Society’s role in the establishment of botanical gardens at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo and the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo
    • Jason Dewees, author, horticulturist, and palm expert at Flora Grubb Gardens, in San Francisco (introduced by Tom Jackson). Mr. Dewees will highlight landscaping with palms and preview the following day’s biennial excursion to La Casa de las Palmas.

Day 4. Wed Oct 12th. Rainbow Falls, Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden and Casa de Las Palmas.

Island: Hilo, Big Island Hilo Hawaiian Hotel

  • Breakfast for all attendees
  • Morning stop at Rainbow Falls
  • Visit Hawai’i Tropical Botanical Garden (8 miles)
  • Lunch at Casa de Las Palmas
  • Banquet dinner
  • Speaker
    • Dr. Andrew Hendersen, curator emeritus NYBG Institute of Systematic Botany (introduced by Dr. Scott Zona). Dr. Henderson’s talk will focus upon the ‘Thrinax Unit’, an exciting group of five, closely-related genera (Coccothrinax, Hemithrinax, Leucothrinax, Thrinax, Zombia).  

Day 5. Thu Oct 13th. Tour Floribunda, Hawaiian Acres Community Center.

Island: Hilo, Big Island Hilo Hawaiian Hotel

  • Breakfast for all attendees
  • Arrive at Hawaiian Acres Community Center in Mountain View
  • Tour Floribunda – The Suchin and Jeff Marcus Garden
  • Free afternoon on your own
  • Dinner on your own

Day 6. Fri Oct 14th. Optional Day Trips.

Island: Hilo, Big Island Hilo Hawaiian Hotel

  • Breakfast for all attendees
  • Tour #1. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Tour and Hike
  • Tour #2. Hamakua Coast sightseeing with box lunch
  • Tour #3. Kona Cloud Forest and Ouer Garden with picnic lunch

Day 7. Sat Oct 15th.

Island: Hilo, Big Island Hilo Hawaiian Hotel

  • Breakfast for all attendees
  • Tour Moani-Lundkvist Garden (Managed by Bob Carrere and Andy Pesce)
  • Box Lunch
  • Tour the Andersen Garden and Nursery
  • 6:00 PM Social Hour
  • 7:00 PM Closing ceremonies emceed by IPS Vice President, Jeffry Brusseau, with entertainment by the “Just-Us” band.

Day 8. Sun Oct 16th. Departure Day.

  • Breakfast for all attendees
  • Transportation from Hilo Hawaiian Hotel to airport included
