The red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) in southeastern Spain, in Almeria
The red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) is thought to have come to Almeria about two years ago from the Spanish area of Levante (Valencia, Alicante and Murcia), however no matter how it got here, the important thing is to fight it. Here through the environmental area of the municipality of Almeria it is being fought with chemical methods previously employed in other parts of Spain, where they also have the problem. This method is very expensive but effective. Two weeks ago we were in the nursery of the deputation of Almeria, where I found more information about this predator. The nursery is fighting the red weevil with pheromone traps which are very effective, and appear to be better than the chemical method. From the information I could gather, it is unwise to transplant or plant palm trees between January to March (especially in February) since this is the time that the boll weevil reproduces. At first, the famous weevil focused solely on the species Phoenix canariensis, but it appears to have evolved and now attacks different species. Here in Almeria other palms have also been affected by the red palm weevil including Phoenix dactylifera, and Washingtonia filifera. It has also been known to attack the fan palm (Chamaerops humilis), the only palm native to Europe. We have seen attacks in the nursery but have not seen any attack in its natural environment. Therefore, this is the information that I have on this subject in Almeria and wanted to share with you. We hope that we all gradually find ways to counteract this scourge threatening our palms. Greetings from Almería.
